Sacks of coal - no more?

Borderline topic maybe for period homes, however, recently ordered five cwt of coal for delivery and was advised that 'open sacks' are no longer used and the coal now comes in sealed plastic bags! Another victory for common sense perhaps from the H&S brigade? At least the coal was tipped into my coal bunker and empty bags taken away. Is this just my coal supplier perhaps?

We still have coal delivered, although we tend to order in bulk. Our last order was 20t and arrived in open sacks and was emptied into our coal bunker

We haven't had a coal delivery for a while (at least one year) but our last half-ton was delivered in open sacks straight in to the coal bunker.

A friend has a traction engine and buys five tons at a time. He had a delivery shortly before Christmas and it was all in plastic bags.

I wonder if it's anything to do with the weight of the 1cwt open sacks? 25kg seems to be the heaviest packaging for all sorts of things these days.

We use two coalmen who both deliver in open sacks,one has scales on his lorry and insists on weighing one bag of your choice and shows you the number of empty bags on completion of the delivery! phil.

Not sure if it is the 25kg rule, but I am told the army are no longer allowed to change a landrover wheel single-handed, since lifting the wheel is above this.

Has anybody else noticed how warm it is? My superser rarely goes above one bar these days,and thats only when it's lit.

I don't worry about global warming when burning a few black coal nuggets or some nutty slack on my fire grate. My abandonment of care is reinforced when I look at how the power is generated in China! :shock:

Fact is our per capita carbon emissions are about four or five times those of the Chinese, yet it is China that is making the greatest effort to develop renewable energy technologies.

But surely that's just their pragmatic response to the fact that they were late coming to the fossil fuel bonanza and having now also acquired the taste of high-energy luxurious living they have to seek out all sources of energy in a post-peak oil world - which is not quite so eco-minded as you imply.

Nothing wrong with the pragmatism of developing renewable energy in the face of peak oil and global warming.

In all seriousness why we,as a Nation, are infesting our Countryside and close shore Ocean with those dreadful wind power generators is a nonsense. They are quite ineffectual in benefiting us with the energy demanded by modern society and business. Why we cannot just get on and build more nuclear power plants right now and be done with it.
