Well I really like what they have done--it's a project and a labour of love for all the right reasons.

For me the drama and emotion of these property programmes come in the struggle and, of course, jeopardy.
People fighting against the odds, but with passion determination and craft. Beeny has none of these plus a ton of money meaning any disaster is just (allegedly) good Tv not the remotest set back for her. Dreadful low end nonsense, I'll get off my soap box right now.

I'm with Jocelyn - I think what they are doing to Rise Hall is admirable and they can't just throw money at it in the way some developers might. I sympathize with many aspects having undertaken my own project on a smaller scale.

From what I can tell (and none of us have all the details) - it does seem that the local authority is being rather difficult. AIUI, East Riding are insisting that a change of use permission is required if the building is going to host weddings/events. Yet, I could do exactly that at my current home without needing planning permission. The dispute seems to rest upon whether Rise Hall is their home or a business premises.

Perhaps not with the council, but I would guess that many of us have experienced moments in our respective projects where we wondered if it was all worth it and maybe we should sell up? I certainly have. I dont see this as 'dramatic', just realistic.

What would you rather happen? Just allow the building to crumble and collapse? It seems fairly clear that without their intervention, this is what would have happened.

It`s just a telly program! my son who took media studies at university points out if the restoration went smoothly it would make a boring prog.He did two weeks with a media co "sexing up" boring news items and inventing others and now belives nothing he watches! phil.

Something tells me that they probably didn't pay for the 'Swift & Beeny Sanitary Engineers' toilet or many of the other products in the house. There is a great deal of product plugging going on each week to the extent that it feels a bit like an infomercial at times.

How we actually managed to go from selling the house, to having a viewing, to making the decision to keep it in 5 minutes was laughable I have to admit.

Not sure about the £2 per square metre plywood last night either. Even from the distance we saw it at I wasn't totally convinced.

Of course Mrs. T sits up whenever the dacshund appears which was only once last night.

I also studied Media Production at university and in the second year I made one of the dullest documentaries ever about the Lighthouse at Swanage.

The lecturer (also a working TV producer) explained the art of making a documentary "story" over the weeks after I'd shot mine. As I got more skilled in the process I got more incredulous that anyone would allow themselves to be filmed at all. I also made the decision to specialise in fiction and computer animation as the whole process was so open to abuse and the majority of what I learned was so intrinsically unpleasant - for example how to make an interview subject talk about a painful experience and then get them to cry on camera :shock:

For example when you listen to someone talking and the camera cuts from their face to something else there has almost certainly been a splice between 2 separate sections of the conversation or even a totally different conversation. If you listen carefully you can often hear the change in intonation which makes it jar. Once you spot that you'll watch TV in an entirely different way.

As Beany is a TV professional herself then I doubt they're manipulating her much but they will be adding as much spice as they can to keep the programme interesting and I'm guessing they will be showing her in a more favourable light than they might under other circumstances.

I still support the restoration project itself and I have no problem with making TV documentaries, but don't for a moment believe that they're telling you the truth.

I just wish that they'd gone into more detail of how things were done, rather than all the silly dramas. I'd have liked the focus to have been on that rather butch decorator, that would have made an interesting program. She looked a much more interesting character than Sarah Beany.

The blue and gold panelling was lovely. All that marking out, and was she masking off too? I don't bother with that now, just paint one bit of the panel carefully, then the next.
