Sash window horns

Hi all, I posted a few weeks ago re whether or not to have wi Dow horns on our new sash and case windows.

We‘ve decided we’re definitely having them on the outside but I wondered if anyone can advise if we should also have them on the inside.

They are for aesthetic purposes only

If you are having them on the outside, for whatever reason, why would you not want them on the inside?
They do in my opinion make the sashes easier to slide. They very readily go into a sort of self-locking vibrational dither, or perhaps that's just old wooden ones that manage to both be lose and jamb at the same time.

Around here, one tends to have either horns on the outside or inside, don't know why. Horns look good, and as Cliff says, help them to slide easier.

One drawback of having them inside, is that it is harder to fit a lock such as these:

Useful if you want to keep it open slightly but remain secure. Something we had in the bathroom in our old house.

No inside horns here, nor do I see any on other buildings, but we do have outside horns on the top sash. I think they were quite regionally influenced - I'd look at what is around you and fit in with that personally.

Unless the window is a particularly squat one, I don't think they do a huge amount.

Also there are horns and horns. Old ones tend to have an elegant curve set half an inch or so beyond the projecting end of the rectangular section of wood. Modern ones are often little more than just a sorn off bevel, a nod to the design with no elegance.

I think horns inside and out, painted the apropriate colours of the woodwork decoration inside/out, look really elegant. But then they are standard here in all houses with original windows dating from the 19th century up to say 1920. It had never occured to me that elsewhere they might only be on the outside. That to me looks unbalanced, but better to do whatever is local and traditional to your area.
