In an upstairs room we peeled off seven layers of wallpaper to reveal a signature of the original decorator - H Clark of Brigg, Lincs, England, The World, Southern Hemisphere, with a date of 1900 or 1908. It's written in pencil directly onto the plaster, and is almost the width of the fireplace directly below.
We want to paint the lime plaster, but this will permanantly destroy a feature which has remained, hidden, for a hundred years. Any suggestions as to how it can be preserved? Photographs are not very clear because the pencil is a similar colour to the lime, and framing it may look a little odd given its position just above the mantlepiece.
