Hello all, I've had a search on this but not quite found an answer!
I'm tidying up the coal hole in our mid 19th century, Georgian style, house - we've been using it as a washing machine space. It's fine for this - albeit always a bit damp and musty.
So, I'd like to put a tidier floor in. The space has an old concrete slab floor from (probably) 100 years ago. It's concrete but still seems to absorb water that gets in (mainly due to cracks above which we're getting fixed too). I'd like to put down clay tiles and have a plan to lay them over a sharp sand base. I don't want to seal the floor completely with cement (even though its concrete the floors seems to have some permeability), and I want the option to remove the tiles if and when we might have more money to do something more drastic in there. I can't afford a full concrete dig out and limecrete replace.
I'm treating it more or less like an outdoor space due to the cold and damp - so would 20cm square tiles on sharp sand over the concrete be OK?
Other notes on the space:
It's 2m x 3m,
It has two vents on one side to the outside - one had a mechanical fan but it stopped working and I'm looking to replace it.
Two walls are completely underground,
The roof is a foot or so below the entrance steps.
There's also a coalhole opening to the pavement (it has small air holes in in it).
I've just whitewashed it with Keim Optil which has helped with the aesthetic.
Any thoughts are welcome!
