I've always thought that reporting on court proceedings, or the leading up to them, is a very difficult area - even before the advent of the web and 24 hour rolling news services. As we are supposed to operate an 'innocent until proved guilty' justice system I can see very little judicial point in even allowing such reporting until after the verdict is handed down.

Rape victims, whether real or fabricated, are afforded anonymity so why not anyone who has been simply accused of a crime? Once the verdict is handed down then reporting restrictions should, of course, be lifted but at least the reporting would be based on the tested evidence.

A lynch mob mentality is a frightening thing indeed.

I don't agree with the vigilante action in your articles Biff, but I do have a slightly different view to the first author.

Might not be a PC view, but in my book there is a difference between not being found guilty and being innocent. I can't speak for the specifics of this case (since there isn't really enough detail on the case). But I have heard of enough cases which were 'unproven', even when it was abundantly clear that wrong-doing was involved.

For example, the best man at my wedding is now a lawyer. He was involved in a case just last month. Two youths smashed their way into a house in the middle of the night. The home was occupied by a lady in her 60s by herself. They stole her car keys and made off in the vehicle. The next day, the car was stopped by Police and after a chase, the youths tried to escape on foot. They were eventually apprehended.

Both denied any knowledge of the buglary, both claimed the other was driving (since the police only caught them after they left the car, they couldn't prove which one was driving). Both have a string of previous convictions for burglary, TWOC and drugs offences. In the end, the CPS would not charge either of them with anything - neither has a driving licence.

So....whilst they were not found guilty of any crime, I really wouldnt describe them as innocent

The two points I picked up on where, his good friend thought it was him in the cctv picture, plenty reason for the police to think it was him. His alibi was solid, good enough to be called innocent of this crime. I'm also way against the sort of vigilantism shown in "outing" him and the damage to his flat

Personally I wouldn't bother taking rapists to court. I would take them in a ( not listed) dilapidated old barn in the middle of nowhere, clamp his manhood in a vice and throw the vice handle away. I would leave on the vice a blunt , rusty old knife and on my way out I would set fire to the barn. That should teach him. ( if the perpetrator is a "her" the vice job wouldn't work though :idea: )

How right you are Moo, It brought heavy tears to my eyes just thinking about the blunt rusty knife. :wink:

I suppose there is another way . I could tie the rapist stripped naked to a tree, somehow fix a gun nearby pointed to his head and tie a piece of string from his frightened manhood to the trigger, then get some glamour girls to dance naked in the vicinity and wait for the bang.

( Thinking about it I was born too late, I am sure I would have made a fantastic inquisitor of centuries gone by)
