Things you meant to change but have let slide.....

What are some examples of things that you've plonked down around the house at some point, thinking that'll do for now, which are not good or attractive but which you've somehow got so used to that you don't notice any more?

As an example, the crappy old cardboard box that I keep newspaper in, next to the fire, is the SAME ONE since 2012. I always thought I would come up with a better solution, perhaps a wicker basket or oak box, but I never have.

That’s only 12 years. We had a bunch of ‘cr*ppy it’ll do for now’ things for 31years. I finally drew a line under them when we unpacked the shipment from Singapore. Now you may be wondering why we we to the expense of sending them back in the container, but of course you can only be 100% sure they have no place in your life when they need to be carried up a couple of flights of stairs. We still have a “that’ll do for now” sofa, but it’s comfortable, inoffensive and importantly light enough for me to move by myself. I hope it doesn’t fall apart as then I would be forced to choose a new one!

I've been pondering a suitable contribution since seeing this post from @Zebra this morning as there are a few that might qualify. Thinking the First Lady might be best placed to decide a tie-breaker I asked her opinion over coffee.....

The twitch of a smile at the corner of her mouth and a vaguely wide eyed look... told me all I needed to know!

Great idea but which to choose! and first, of course, one has to tour the house looking carefully for these unseen things!

There's the coir carpet that folds over a meter or so at the back of the bedroom waiting since (about 2019) to be trimmed to size.
There's the pile of wood trims to step over in my son's room waiting to be fitted to the windows (the son has since left home!)
There's the little stack of key-hole-trim sitting on the kitchen cupboard waiting to be fitted to the cupboard that was restored about 10 yrs ago.
There's the centre kitchen island which is a 3m long oak refectory table which has been sitting on bricks for about 8yrs to get it up to work surface height, and oh look just under said table are the pieces of wood waiting to become the tables leg extensions!

Cleaning my basement. I tell my self on the next bad weather day I’ll get it done, there have been many bad weather days, I go down, look about and go back upstairs for another tea.

An appropriate heritage approach to collecting up discarded items before taking them to the midden.

Sorting out the master bedroom, lifted the floor, put in insulation against the cold from the garage underneath, re-wired the room to add better lighting, sorted out all the heating pipes, did all the filling and sanding prep, put the old carpet back down temporarily but then never actually got round to painting it.

Furniture is in now, new curtains are up, whole room is “done” apart from actually painting the walls and replacing the carpet, so all the filled chases etc still visible.

Speaking of kitchens and middens.

The First Lady has a penchant for antique glass and while excavating the ground around an old tin shed, under which the even older Outdoor Lavvy and its associated Midden had once been situated, the rather aged glassware below was unearthed. This very small sample of 'findings' is now displayed in its own shelving system - itself made from up-cycled architrave removed as 'not in keeping with the house' - and now situated in the kitchen I am currently trying to finish re-decorating.

Erm, family bathroom......

Did the en-suite - that is actually truly finished! - gutted the remains of the old family bathroom, then stupidly started a business. 2 years on now and zero progress, whole family has to use the shower in the en-suite to our bedroom, so a degree of co-ordination is required each evening to get all the kids through before we can go to bed!

It'll be done by Christmas...........
