Visually exposed rafter end repair ideas?

The photo attached is of 5x7" pine (Alpine chalet) rafters which are long and intended to be exposed, can anyone suggest a visually ok repair to two with damaged ends to avoid the hassle of replacement? To my eye bolts would look fine, also metal plates, if done sympathetically or the use of glue etc. I have a background in heavy timber frame design but not the less well understood art of fixing repair quandaries. A reference to published articles or book would be great or if anyone out there has a solution in mind, the actual spec and rough dimensions of any mechanically fixed lap or flitch plate repair joint would be appreciated. I am assuming you don't want to use a 'sistered' approach as pictured? You could use a simple scarf joint to join an extension of suitable length to the rafters foot secured with through-bolts/screws across the width of the timber. To do this though you would have to excise a long step in the old rafter to ensure the extension can be given a strong and secure hold.

Thanks Cubist. I can probably cut a scarf joint in place, with the bolts drilled vertically from below, if I understand you correctly. A panel of metal roof can be shifted a bit. Would this under squinted scarf be approx 2' or 3' overall?
