Wallpapering lime render

Can one wallpaper a lime based render? If it is not completely verboten, presumably it's better to take the risk on an internal, rather than external, wall?
Thank you for any assistance that anyone is able to afford.

Wallpapers have been used on interior lime plaster walls for several centuries. If the wall has been freshly lime plastered it should ideally be left for up to six months before papering.

I would guess that using a modern vinyl wallpaper would rather hinder the breathability of the lime plaster though. I saw some of this on a brick wall which was clearly trying to breathe; the cement pointing outside wasn't helping either. The result was that the wallpaper was hanging by the odd square inch and so it covered the wall without really being attached to it!

We are in the process of stripping wallpaper from our house in two areas with lime plastering. In one room, the exterior wall has been cement rendered, and the interior lime walls covered in 6 (yes, SIX) layers of wallpaper, as well as one layer of very thin polystyrene foam. Amazingly enough, the plaster actually appears to be mostly intact under all of this. The only places where large areas have blown, are on an interior lath and plaster wall, and I suspect this is due to the wall being messed about with rather than the paper itself. The paper comes off the wall quite easily, without need for steaming or anything, so I guess it's not adhereing as well as it should be but that was not apparent from looking at it. Though you may not want to put up 6 layers of paper.
The other area, the exterior wall has no render - bare stone with lime pointing. The 3-4 layers of wallpaper come off to reveal quite soggy, but still mostly intact lime plaster. The soggiest area is certainly due to water ingress due to broken guttering, but the rest of the wall has suffered too.

This 1- 2 mm polystyrene foam was once thought to be useful; my dad put some up in a particularly cold bedroom in about 1960 - the trade name "Kotina" springs to mind but I mght have that wrong. I'm not convinced it made the slightest improvement, and I now realise that the cold dampness was almost certainly caused by the flat roof leaking... I recently found some of the same product on the lower half of the walls in my hall, covered with brown gloss paint - it was a blighter to get off without damaging the lime plaster, but it's all gone now .

Yes I'm sure they did it to improve insulation in the room, but equally sure that it can't have had any positive effect whatsoever. Luckily for us it was put on over another layer of wallpaper so it all comes off very easily.
