Wallrock Fibreliner Wallpaper: anybody used this?

Has anyone used this stuff? I’ve just spotted it online and it sounds too good to be true; easy to apply, covers bumps and deficits, easy to work with. Anyone know?

Hi,
I too would love to hear from someone who has used these seemingly incredible wall covering (albeit a bit pricey per roll). The supposed savings in heating costs may pay for the rolls over a year or too i suppose. And a bumpy uneven farmhouse like ours could do with something to smooth out those lumps and cracks etc!

WEll, although rather a different type of lining paper, if it is as good quality as their 1200ml lining paper then it will be good----but do we really need to create a completely smooth finish in our Period Homes? :roll:

I think I might like to, in the nice rooms. Not that the walls are particularly wonky at the moment anyway. When I had to de-Georgian the decor I knew the right thing to do would have been to get rid of the wallpaper that was there and fix what was underneath and start again. However as I didn't want to invest a lot of effort just to hand over to tenants we put another layer of ordinary lining paper over the top and painted that. I am still debating with myself whether I want to go with plain colour or wallpaper eventually. I love some of the Chinoiserie wallpapers, and for the dining room they would be perfect, but I'm a bit undecided about how it would look with some of our pictures. Not that it's a pressing issue!

Just a quick one!.We have used a foam backed paper on a cold single brick bedroom wall and our cat has discovered this and damaged it.would this type of lining paper be cat proof? (I was thinking of sanding the damage and papering over it).

I know that lining paper is designed to cover up lumps and bumps and unevenness, but I suspect that the cat will still show through if you wallpaper over it.

Seriously, the non-woven stuff is very strong and tear resistant but a cats claws are very sharp, I reckon they'd rip through any paper if they are inclined to attack it.

That's reason no 998 in Feltwell's list of "Why dogs make infinitely superior pets compared to cats" then :wink: :lol:

We have various wonky walls and ceilings and I've been thinking about applying lining paper to tidy them up before painting. I'm wondering how well this actually works if the lining paper is completely stretch-proof as that first product claims to be. Wouldn't applying such a paper over a wonky surface result in creases in the paper instead of being able to strtch things out with a papering brush?

I've not done very much wallpapering in my time and what little I have done was about 25 years ago so perhaps papering techniques have moved on? Any advice and tip would be much appreciated.

We all like what we like but I swear by the heavier quality lining from B&Q followed up with one of the gorgeous thick hand blocked papers by FnB. The double thickness of that provides a sumptuous finish, and yes, the stretch is good over lumps - you can make incisions but really only as a last resort.

I second Joce's opinion!

Lady A , it is hard to decide whether to go for plain wall colour or wall paper, as you remark there are some fabulous choices to be made for Period properties. I think that it is down to personal taste and aesthetics, but also depends on whether you are in your forever home. No point in spending out for it to be ripped off by the next owner in a year or two.

As I trawl through house details I do rather sigh with horror at the houses with the ubiquitous feature wall paper from some of the DIY stores--it switches me off immediately.

I know that you get what you pay for, but have you seen any cheaper alternatives to F'n'B Joce? £80 - £120 a roll is a bit steep - especially if your house contains 3 small people careering around at high velocity armed with various toys, the life expectancy of wallpaper is probably less than it would be in your place!

William Morris paper can be got for around £40/roll, and Laura Ashley do some interesting papers on sale for around £10 - £15 at the moment. Probably others too.

We've got Laura Ashley in the bedroom, lovely design ( I think, though I dislike most of them) but it ripped constantly as we were working with it! You had to be so so careful! So many of the cheaper papers are really very flimsy and I just wouldn't bother with them, I'd prefer paint if I couldn't run to an £80 roll. That's just a personal choice.

The FnB papers we've put up are robust, wipe clean and make it immediately look like a sumptuous period property. The Laura Ashley one, by contrast, has now been up 5 yrs, won't wipe clean for some reason and just looks like it wants replacing already. I plan either fabric for this room ( can't believe how lovely and insulating fabric is) or plainly painted walls and an Aubusson carpet. If you like richly patterned rugs, as I do, then pattern on the walls as well is completely unnecessary. However a richly patterned rug with a watered silk on the walls and gold framed paintings would be lovely.

I seem to remember some discussion about the breathability of wallpaper paste in the dim and distant past, but not the conclusion.

In short, are all pastes the same in this respect and what product(s) do people recommend?

Not sure about breathability but one problem I have had in the past with putting up the Erfurt non-woven lining paper is that the paste dries too quickly to get the paper up.

It's paste-the-wall - I found it was better by sizing the wall by pasting the wall first, letting it dry, then pasting it again, but you still had to be quick. That was just using ordinary Solvite paste that you mix up yourself - next time I think I'll try the ready mixed stuff that is supposed to be designed for the job:-

I was looking at that with interest and came across this similar product from the same company:

I'm curious about the huge price difference - more than 10x. :shock: - for what looks very similar to me, though I'm obviously missing something here.

That's just bog standard lining paper, albeit in a heavy weight. Hence I presume you need to paste the paper rather than the wall, leave it for a bit to expand before hanging it, where with the non-woven stuff you paste the wall and stick it straight up, and it doesn't shrink. It won't be as heavy as the non-woven stuff and I don't think it will give quite as good a finish, having said that I'm sure you could still do a decent job with it.

I was intending to hang the lining paper, paint it and then hopefully never strip it again - future decorations just being a fresh lick of paint. Possibly optimistic, but before decorating I tried to do every job I could possibly think of, so there was never likely to be any need to come back and do invasive work such as adding extra wall sockets. I hate decorating, so the thought of future redecorating being limited to the room in question being out of action for a long weekend sounded highly appealing! Hence I thought I'd go for the toughest, most durable lining paper I could find.

Thanks for that. I'm not particularly fussed about the price because in the grand scheme of things even £35/roll won't amount to too much for what I need and, like you, I'm planning on never doing it more than once. In fact, I'm hoping never to have to paint it more than once. But when there's such a price difference I'm always curious to know if it's really worth the money as I can always spend a few hundred pounds on something else that needs doing!

My father has done a fair bit of wallpapering in his time and is happy to help, so I'm not too fussed about pasting the paper in the traditional way as he's used to that and it's also the method I've used before about 20 years ago. Also, my feeling is that a bit of 'give' in the paper might be a good thing on some of the walls I'll be covering, though that may also lead to problems when hanging adjacent strips. Hmm.

Perhaps I should try both - in which case it would probably be best to use the cheaper one first, because if it works well then I can leave it in place and if it doesn't then I'll only have wasted some of my time and you'll be able to say you told me so :wink:

Mrs DJH swears by this paper which replicates unfinished trowelled plaster. Super Fresco pattern number 19059 from http://www.grahambrown.com available from any shed. It's fooled many people over the years including some embarrassed builders who have remarked about it.

Unfortunately it's a vinyl paper so not breathable as such, but as we use it above panelling on the ground floor and full length on upper floors breathability is not a consideration.
