I've never understood the point of arranging books in height order.
How on earth do you locate the volume that you need?

I was once told that books should be arranged tallest at each end diminishing to smaller in the middle although when the wealthy bought 'books by the yard' they were all the same height.

Among my collection (there's another bookshelf else where ) I have a copy of a limited edition of The Queens Dolls House 1924. Very good for seeing what was in at the time!!

Later edit.. and the first edition of Plastering Plain and Decorative by William Millar which has recipes for all types of plaster and how to create different effects such a scagliolla and ivory or smoked plasteretc. Nothing in there about foam though. :lol:

Ha ha. Yes, I see what you mean.

I'm afraid I'm an inveterate (is that the right word?) collector and books on the Arts and Crafts era are my particular interest. It all stems from buying Lawrence Weavers book English Leadwork, Its Art and History second of the larger volumes from the right next to George Bankart's Art of the Plasterer. I'm also interested in old books on plumbing, masonry,garden ornament ( because I used to make them as well!) architecture,(traditional not modern) crafts such as smithying, bell founding, coppersmithing,leadwork etc etc.

Mrs DJH has banned me from markets and boot sales as I'm always buying 'rust or rubbish' as she calls it. I also collect dairy equipment, plumbing tools, garden tools Ferguson tractor implements, although I'm selling them now through ill health but the money means I can buy more 'rust and rubbish' yippeee........

Sorry. I'm banging on again.

That wouldn't cover the area of cheese production would it? A little bird told me that that there is somebody here who fancies themselves as the next and mighty Cheese Baron.

The trouble with ironing sheets is that once they've been slept in they get all crumpled anyway. Same with clothes.

Amazing collection there DJH. I have a few old books on construction and woodworking. I use all of them, I find them much more informative than more modern books. The carpentry books are particularly useful as they inform me how to do things properly, and not lash things up quickly. I am interested in your books on plastering, as this is a skill I wish to get right, especially as lime plasterers are very expensive and all modern plasterers I have met just want to board and skim. Which is the most informative practical book covering normal plastering in your opinion please?? My construction books have a few pages on plastering but they differ slightly on the detail of the setting coat. Some say trowel smooth, others say use a wooden float and water to scour to a very smooth finish then so over with a stock brush whatever that is! After having my small back room boarded and skimmed I am adamant never to have that done again as the end result was terrible in my opinion, and even if I had used a competent plasterer rather than a joker who lives across the road I still hate that walls sound hollow, and there are real weaknesses where there are voids behind the plasterboard (something I found out when putting the skirtings on).

:lol: :lol: :lol: yes, I know, when the M1 was closed because of the fire somebody set up a board and did some. The actual ironing looks rather ordinary though, just pants and shirts.

Well a small bit, I've got some cheese moulds, wooden and metal, a curd cutting machine and a hand held one but nothing else. I've got some butter making stuff and a display of butter pats etc. I feel a photo coming on here.

I'll look some out later Plasticpigeon and let you know. The best one for plastering is the Millar book which I think Donhead Publishing has a facsimile version out but I'm not sure if it's the first edition or one of the later ones which were edited by Bankart. Anyway as soon as I can I'll find out.

Absolutely. This link is to the 2nd edition and I can't see a lot of difference between it and the 1st edition. What is missing is the advertisements in the front and back which in themselves are worth seeing. I'll try and scan them ................

The adverts are so interesting and really beautiful, must have been amazing to be able to have so many real craftspeople work on a house. Almost makes me wistful, and then I have to remember all the other things that didn't exist, antibiotics, sumptuous plumbing, female equality, stretchy skinny jeans, i.anything ..........
