What kind of house whould a chap live in I wonder, especially one of middling income? What is the built equivalent of the well-pressed trouser or a three piece tweed suit? I feel sure it would be a period property. Something mock Tudor with a perfectly manicured lawn and well clipped privet perhaps?

On the contrary Nigel, a Chap doesn't actually own his residence. When in town he stays at his club (naturally a fine period building) - weekends are more usually spent at the country pile belonging to the family of the gal he is currently dallying with. Often, said weekend retreat is chosen more for its proximity to a good race meet than the gal in question.

This Chap is starting to sound a bit more like a cad and a bounder though. :roll:

Chaps, as characterised by their eponymous journal, are concerned about putting up a decent show.

How one's house presents itself to the world must, by analogy, be just as important. I feel they would have a decent front garden, with a perfectly clipped hedge or smart railings and a gate. They would abhor the modern tendency to rip out such features and pave over with concrete bricks on which to park a vulgar 4x4. One's automobile - probably something old - would be tucked discreetly away in a garage or mews.

It would certainly have a dining room, with silver cutlery, starched napkins in rings and port in decanters which are passed around in the correct direction. The hall would have a hat and umbrella stand for those essential gentleman's accessories...

i remember living in the welsh vallys for a time. a local pub was one of these men only clubs. being single at the time i never went to it. i am sure the chaps that did go had a whale of a time though. strangely the local chip shop as well as selling fish and chips also had a large rotating magazine rack that sported nothing more than news papers and porno mags. :shock:

Dear all,

I am sure you will be relieved to hear that the 2009 Chap Olympiad passed off without incident - certainly not the type of incident that bedevils those competitive and foreign sporting events.

Sadly, the good lady and I were unable to motor up to Town to join in the celebrations of Britsih panache, elegance and savoir-faire. However, I understand it was fine display of queuing, pipe-smoking, moustache-waxing and monocle-wearing. I'm also led to believe the gentlemen put on a good show too.

Well, I'm sorry, but I find the pipe-smoking Chap in your daguerreotype a trifle brash. Matchin' wesskit and bags will never do, and that cravat definitely has the look of the co-respondent about it.

According to my batman, said fellow was indeed the mascot for the 2009 Chap Olympiad, and the pipe he sports was the Olympic Pipe which was lit at the beginning of the games and kept alight throughout. I imagine that explains the Union Jack too - which would be a trifle cumbersome on the omnibus otherwise.
