What type of floor tile is this?

Hi,

I am pulling up lino from the downstairs bathroom in our Edwardian house and underneath are these grey tiles. I want to clean them up but not sure what they are made from.

Originally it appears there was a side door leading to this area, an entrance for the help.

They might not even be the original floor, so I am just assuming it is.

They look to me like 6 inch or 150 mm square floor tiles. Do they feel cold/cool to the touch? If you rap a buckle on them do they feel/sound very hard? If you drop a small nail or screw on them does the nail/screw ring?

They are cool not cold and the nail makes a ring ping sound.

In this pic you can see there is a step down. So that area is lower than the other rooms. Where the bath is was an entrance door.

They are most likely a heavy floor tile. These are typically bedded into a mortar (cement) like adhesive and the gaps between grouted with the same material. All of which is hard and water resistant. The upper faces are unlikely to be glazed and will very smooth to the touch. Domestic cleaning products will usually be sufficient but if there are bad or stubborn stains there are some specialist products available in the market.
