I've got Photobucket but haven't a clue how to use it. I paid money for extra storage and now I've changed laptops it keeps telling me I need to pay for the same extra storage I've already paid for...grrr

Yes I have Penners and I've just paid for 50 whatever bites and I see that there are only some 6000 of some 10,000 uploaded and I've used 42% of storage. I just can't seem to get hold of what I have to do and searching for pictures through pages of albums is a nightmare.

Why can't we just copy and paste??

If you mean paste images into our PPUK posts, yes, that would be very nice. But don't forget that that we all enjoy this forum completely free of charge, and the owners of the site will have to pay for its hosting somewhere. So, once their the limit of their hosting space agreement has been reached, the hosting company will close the door unless they pay an additional fee.

You don't have to upload your images to Photobucket. Pretty well any cloud-based image host will do - Google for example. Most of them offer a reasonable chunk of free space before you have to start paying, so you can set up several different accounts with various companies, to get the maximum free cloud storage.

Obviously this is all beyond my capabilities. At the moment Photobucket back-up is uploading 355 of 4799 items with 4 failures. :roll:

Cloud storage...SkyDrive maybe, although it's called One Drive now for some reason. I used that when I had my old PC and it worked well for storing things and it worked on my new Windows 8 pc until I upgraded to 8.1 and I'm now told that PCs upgrading to 8.1 don't support SkyDrive/OneDrive (or at least files saved beforehand can't be retrieved)... :roll:

I appreciate that the Forum must have limits and I accept that but all I want to do is load a couple of pictures...

Oh well, back to the hanging slates I'm putting on a small porch. Lovely weather here...sun hat and cream required...

I don't believe that, Doug. I'm not a Sky/One/Drive user, but I suspect your problem lies in the fact that you now have a different computer (which will have a different identity) tothe one from which you uploaded your files to Skydrive. Microsoft say quite unequivocally that, in order to access your Skydrive files, you simply sign in to your Onedrive account in exactly the same way as before. Once you've done that, I think you'll find that you'll have access to all your older files.

No Penners, I'm right. I've deleted the information from my OneDrive page that told me that Windows 8 which has been upgraded to 8.1 does not support retrieving files so I can't show you it. I can only get back files from 2010 onwards whereas I have files on there from 2007. It also said that I had to go back to the PC where I signed up for SkyDrive and tell it to allow access. Difficult that as it went to recycling many years ago...

Still, Microsoft Picture manager has them all so I suppose I should save them onto a disc from there. Whenever I upload old files that I can't access from SkyDrive it tells me that the files exist!!!

Maybe I should stick to gardening from now on... 8) 8)

Quite right Doug. Computers are all bonkers and who knows what they're plotting. I have a very stupid one, and want nothing cleverer. Stick with hanging slates and gardening, definitely. Just don't forget to post us some pictures... Oh.

Since 1.29 pm 396 items have uploaded to Photobucket...so in 4 hours about 41 pictures and 1 error and I've just paid $30 to upgrade. :evil:

Anyway can anyone guess what it is? I can put Lady A's mind at rest. It's nothing to do with cheese, well not that I know of.

It looks like some sort of a squashing device. Could it be for ironing socks? Pressing flowers? Flattening tins for recycling? Squashing cheese to go in sandwiches? - ah, no, you said nothing to do with cheese...... Flattening lead perhaps? Into stripey patterns?
PS I might get one of those photo buckets. Tried it with a normal bucket, doesn't seem to work.

You are correct though FF it is a window lead mould and I've finally acquired one after all these years. I've had to clean it up by removing rust and fitting a new 'old' handle and a good oiling of the hinge and handle pivots.

It is designed to cast three calmes at a time each about 18" long and I've used it already to see how they turn out but as I was in a hurry the mould didn't get hot enough but I managed a fairly good one which I wound through the lead vice and ended up with a calme 33" long on a fairly loose vice setting.

Perhaps you could upload a couple more pictures for me FF?

Doug, I'm intrigued by that statement. I've made a few leaded window panels to repair ones in my house but I have absolutely no training in this at all so I may have been doing it incorrectly. I bought lengths of ready made calme and I thought that stretching it was only meant to be very slight to remove any kinks and done by holding one end in a vice and pulling the other either by hand and pliers or with a lever. You say that you "wound through the lead vice" which makes it sound more like a mangle or similar to a swaging machine, and that you almost doubled the length of the lead by doing this. Can you explain this in a bit more detail please?

Well Me! the 'stretching' process you describe is mainly to help straighten the calme before using it as it can become a bit twisted in both transit and storage as you know. There are some pictures on page 30 of this topic showing the 'Lead Mill' or 'Glaziers Vice'. One of the pictures of a glaziers shop shows one chap with his foot on one end of the calme while pulling on the other to straighten it.

Not too many years ago it was part of the plumbers job to make lead lights and somewhere I have a reference to plumbers tool allowance which has a list of tools a plumber must have to qualify for this payment and included are glass cutters and putty knives.

Lead calme available today is formed by extrusion where molten lead is forced through formers to produce the required shape with different formers for different profiles. The same process is used to make lead pipes. However, casting such a thin item in a mould, it's not possible, under ordinary conditions and without heating the lead too hot (when the danger of fumes given off is dangerous) to get a very long casting as the molten lead will freeze before reaching any great length. An 18" casting is quite easily achievable but the profile is much thicker than used for glazing (as you can see from the picture above) so, to get the correct profile, the casting is passed though the mill. This process then reduces the thickness and profile depending on how tightly the sides of the mill are adjusted. It also smooths out any imperfections from the casting process and polishes the profile or sides of the came as it passes through. I have a small section of this stage that I didn't chuck back in the pot. Perhaps FF will oblige me once more by posting another picture for me!

The two mills I have appear to produce only one profile in them but I'm still trying them out (when I get time!) to see what profiles they produce under different side pressure. There are quite a few different profiles of calme and I'm not sure if a different mill was required for each profile or if there were interchangeable innards! The first calme I 'pulled' through was not particularly tight but still doubled in length! It came out a bit twisted and not able to support it's own weight. I could do with Mrs DJH helping but I'm not sure she'll be too keen somehow...

I hope that describes it for you. Bit long winded I'm afraid but I do get carried away with things to do with lead...

I have an mystery object which you may be able to help identify. Blade is 60cm long (well spotted Keith!) , handle 40cm. Sharp part of blade is the part to the left so it is the opposite to how a sickle for example would cut. Top of blade is quite thick - maybe 1cm. Any ideas?
