Hello, we are renovating our 300 year old cottage- some parts are very old and some parts are new- i say new, probably 100 years old. It is made of stone and lime mortar mainly. We have uncovered a beam which was a window lintel. Im trying to save it- but it is in pretty bad shape. Im wondering what the base side shapes means in terms of age. Im wondering if it was a railway sleeper which would mean it’s been added on later. It has square holes in it and is indented with a square shape. It’s slowly drying out, but very crumbly. Any pearls of wisdom? Thanks Emma
