Interesting 'noggins' between the ceiling joists. I've never seen anything like that before and am wondering why they are there. I'm assuming the floorboards above are all nailed/screwed down and therefore preventing the joists from moving, so I don't understand why those 'noggings' are required or what they are supposed to be doing.
No, they aren't rebated. Definitely not period to the original construction as the rest of the timbers are all chamfered with fancy stops.I used a tennis ball to guide the initial identification of the high spots of the master bedroom floor here before mapping the location, run direction and relative height of every joist and beam.
Those noggins do look odd, are they rebated into the joists?
