I met him when he called in to view our newly purchased house just over 20 years ago.
He was full of comment and bluster, but sounded very knowledgeable. He was telling me all about various parts of my house and what I should and shouldn't do.
From my research prior to buying, having had the council's heritage officer over to advise and joining various groups etc such as this one, I was able to dismiss a lot of what he said as useless gabble. He was just a very confident person able to speak as if he knew everything. At this stage he was just moving into period properties.
I'd guess over the years he's picked up more knowledge, but I also expect he still talks with confidence on things he knows nothing about, but sounds like he does.
I believe he was a gem miner prior to this (over simplified I think) and he just moved into heritage surveys as he saw a market to make money having moved back into the country.
Again, my opinion is that, he can talk well and scare new buyers, that's where his market is aimed, into believing him due to their lack of knowledge and build further sales on to this.
I won't be buying any of his books.
